We start by checking the wall for plumb and flat - even an eighth of an inch of bow over four feet will telegraph through the finished tile. We add backer board or skim-coat where needed, then dry-lay the pattern to confirm cuts land in symmetrical places, centered over the range or balanced at the corners.

Showers get a full waterproofing membrane behind the tile, niches are framed and waterproofed before tile ever goes up, and every cut around an outlet or fixture is hand-trimmed to sit snugly behind the cover plate.
