A Real Estate Job That Led to Flooring
Sometimes, the path to success isn’t mapped out by a grand business plan, but rather by a series of unexpected events that shape a journey. For Dennis D. Carlo, his entry into the flooring business began with a real estate job at the age of 24. While working in real estate, Dennis started buying flooring directly from the mills for rental properties. This led him to realize the potential of flooring, even though at the time, he had little experience in the industry.
“I didn’t have a strategic plan,” says Dennis. “I was just trying to make sense of the math, and I thought buying flooring for rental properties would be a good side business.”
The Early Days: Learning by Doing
The initial venture into flooring wasn’t as smooth as Dennis had hoped. With no real experience, he relied on what he knew—doing the math on the back of a napkin and making decisions based on trial and error. Despite these humble beginnings, Dennis’ drive and determination helped him push forward.
“When I was 24, I didn’t know anything about flooring,” recalls Dennis. “I was just trying to figure it out as I went along.”
It wasn’t a perfect plan, but sometimes, taking a risk is worth it.. Dennis’ early struggles laid the foundation for the values that would later guide Carpet To Go Flooring—perseverance, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to improving.
The Strategic Shift: From Real Estate to Flooring Business
While his initial experience in flooring stemmed from a side hustle related to real estate, Dennis quickly saw the potential in the flooring industry. He shifted his focus entirely, leaving behind real estate to concentrate on what would eventually become Carpet To Go Flooring.
“I didn’t really have the experience I thought I’d need, but I knew that I wanted to make it work,” says Dennis. “It wasn’t an easy transition, but I was willing to learn, and that’s what helped me keep going.”
The drive to control his own destiny and provide value to customers led to the creation of a business built on the principles of honesty, respect, and customer satisfaction.
